I was first introduced to the Greek Frappe at our Greek Orthodox Church during coffee hour. They usually have hot coffee available for everyone. On occasion, they also have these delicious Greek Frappes available for a small donation.
When I first tasted one of these Greek Frappes, I thought they were some fancy super difficult drink like the ones you get at your local coffee shop.
However, I recently learned how to make them and felt absolutely amazed at how easy it was and how simple the ingredients were.

What is a Greek Frappe?
If you’re wondering what on earth a Greek Frappe is, let me explain. It’s also known as ‘Nescafé frappé’ and it’s super ingrained into Greek culture. It’s a strong iced coffee made using instant coffee, sugar, water and ice.
The most difficult part about it is that you need a handheld milk frother. If you don’t have one, you can always resort to shaking your mixture really well which might take some effort on your part.
I’ve bought a few different frothers and most of them are battery powered. Personally, I don’t like them. As soon as the batteries are anything but full strength, the frother power goes way down.
I really dislike having to get new batteries constantly. I prefer this corded frother by K-Brands.
This is just my preference but I love making these in a mason jar. I’ve been trying to reduce the amount of plastic I use on a daily basis.
I’ve stopped using plastic cups and replaced them with mason jars. I could just use regular glasses but I find the mason jars have a much more rustic feel, not to mention they’re pretty durable.

Greek Frappe Pro Tip
The recipe does suggest using a small amount of hot water to froth the mixture. While you can opt for cold water if you prefer, I’ve noticed that using hot water helps ensure everything dissolves properly and results in a higher froth.
Classic Greek Frappe
Equipment
- 1 Drinking glass or cup with tight-fitting lid
- 1 Handheld milk frother
Ingredients
- 1 TBSP Sugar
- 1 TBSP Instant Coffee
- 3 TBSP Hot Water
- Ice
- Cold Water
Optional Ingredients
- Milk
- Half & Half
Instructions
- Pour all three ingredients into a glass or cup.
- Use a handheld frother and continue frothing until the mixture stops rising. It should have a very light and airy texture. If you don’t have a handheld frother, you can pour the ingredients into a container with a tight-fitting lid. Then shake the mixture really well. Once it’s foamy and thick enough to hold its shape, you’re done frothing.
- Now add in a handful of ice and fill the glass the rest of the way with cold water.
- You can add a splash of milk, half & half, or even some creamer if you’re feeling really decadent.
